The following is a very brief summary, taken from immigration law reports, of some approved National Interest Waivers for Advanced degree Professionals. This summary may give you an idea of the kind of professionals who have been considered qualified for NIW purposes, however, be advised that many of these cases were approved prior to the stricter requirements implemented by the INS as of August, 1998.

SCIENTISTS:

 

  • Scientists conducting important research have had the most success.
  • Performing important research at prestigious institutions is a national interest winner
  • Approved, in two weeks, the research doctor at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University who was studying the pathogenesis of AIDS.
  • Approved an electrical engineer with a Ph.D. in his field who was going to conduct studies on options for improving solar energy efficiency at a research institution with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy.
  • Approved a scientist with a Ph.D. to perform research on hurricanes to predict their speed, power, and direction and who would develop instruments to assist in that goal.
  • Approved a scientist with a Ph.D. to conduct research in satellite remote sensing technology, ecosystem dynamics simulation modeling, land-atmosphere interactions, and land surface climatological analysis which would be utilized by NASA.
  • Approved a self-petitioning physicist with a Ph.D. to work as a telecommunications satellite engineer.
  • Approved, in three weeks, a scientist with extensive experience in agricultural waste recycling.
  • Approved an alien to work as a particle research scientist for a company engaged in the design and development of electrophoretic technology for a new flat panel display screen for the presentation of data and graphics.
  • Approved a Biomedical Engineer.

BUSINESSPEOPLE:

 

  • Approved a businessman who had rescued a phosphate fertilizer manufacturing plant from bankruptcy
  • Approved the vice president of finance and business development of an international shipping company.
  • Approved, in three weeks, the president and chief operating officer of a personal computer manufacturing company.
  • Approved a businessman to work on the financial side of a company conducting research on the use of ozone to decontaminate blood and blood products, hoping it would inactivate lipid envelope viruses, which include HIV.
  • Approved a waiver for the president of a company that sold tools and equipment to the U.S. horse industry.
  • Approved a Decision Science and Engineering Systems Analyst who specialized in the identification and management of the risks associated with giving credit through credit cards.

  • Approved an Electrical Engineer who specializes in semiconductor physics research and development.
  • Approved a Material Sciences Engineer who specializes in conductive composites.
  • Approved an Environmental Engineer who specializes in the decontamination of hazardous materials.
  • Approved a Material Science Engineer who specializes in aircraft coating systems.
  • Approved a Transportation Engineer.

HEALTH-RELATED:

 

  • Approved an internist where the area of intended employment had the lowest ratio of doctors to residents of any county in Mississippi.
  • Approved an Endocrinologist.
  • Approved a Medical researcher specializing in human genetics.
  • Approved a Medical Informatics Researcher.

ARTISTS:
