On September 14, 2005, the Border and Transportation Security Directorate of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a notice in the Federal Register (Vol. 70, Number 177, pg. 54398-54400) listing additional ports-of-entry to the US-VISIT program to be implemented and operational no later than December 31, 2005. These additional ports-of-entry are scheduled to be implemented in phases leading up to December 31, 2005. For a list of these new ports-of-entry by date of scheduled implementation, please see below.

What is US-VISIT?
The United States Visitor and Immigrant Status Indicator Technology (US-VISIT) Program, under the direction of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is a border entry/exit system for non-immigrant visa holders. The goals of the US-VISIT program, as stated by the DHS are that the program:

  • Enhances the security of our citizens and visitors,
  • Facilitates legitimate travel and trade,
  • Ensures the integrity of our immigration system, and
  • Protects the privacy of our visitors.

US-VISIT currently applies to all visitors (with limited exemptions) entering the United States. This includes visitors traveling under the Visa Waiver Program. Along with standard information gathered from foreign visitors upon entry to the U.S., the program entail scanning travel documents, "biometric identifiers" (e.g. inkless fingerprints and digital photographs), checking visitors' identities against databases and watchlists, and verifying compliance with visa and immigration policies. When departing from the U.S., procedures include verification of identities with similar "biometric identifiers," and the creation of a departure record. The US-VISIT requirements do not replace visa requirements for entering the United States. US-VISIT does not apply to U.S. citizens. The exemptions to enrollment requirements noted above are described on the DHS US-VISIT website.

The US-VISIT program has been and continues to be implemented in phases. For specifics regarding the US-VISIT program, see the DHS website's US-VISIT section at: http://www.dhs.gov/dhspublic/interapp/content_multi_image/content_multi_image_0006.xml. Information available includes:

  • Enrollment requirements,
  • How it works,
  • Current Ports of Entry,
  • Multi-lingual videos and brochures, and
  • Privacy information.

A DHS Fact Sheet about the US-VISIT program can be found at: http://www.dhs.gov/dhspublic/interapp/press_release/press_release_0710.xml.
