On May, 26, 2005, the U.S. Department of State announced the introduction of a new passport application procedure online. Applicants for U.S. passports may enter personal information securely online, then print the finished form. A barcode system has been implemented to ensure privacy of the data. The online form can be accessed at the State Department website at: http://www.travel.state.gov/passport. Though the information is input online, the data is not stored by the State Department, and the printed form must be submitted, along with the required accompanying documentation, to any of the 6,000 passport application acceptance facilities around the U.S. or at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad. The State Department states that over 8.8 million U.S. passports were issued last year, and the Department expects to issue over 10 million U.S. passports this year. |
